Suikoden 2 Anime Announced Alongside New Mobile Gacha Game

Author : Matthew May 14,2025

Earlier this week, Konami delighted fans of classic RPGs with a special live stream focused entirely on the beloved Suikoden franchise. The series hasn't seen a new main entry since a side story released over a decade ago exclusively for the PSP in Japan, leading to a mix of anticipation and uncertainty about what this event would bring. The announcements left fans with mixed emotions: an exciting Suikoden anime (yay!) and a long-awaited new Suikoden game...but for mobile (okay, sure!) and with gacha mechanics (oh no!).

Let's dive into the anime first, titled simply "Suikoden: The Anime." This series is based on the events of Suikoden 2 and marks the first production from Konami Animation. While details on the visual style and international availability are still under wraps, we were treated to a brief glimpse of the scenery:

This is thrilling news for dedicated Suikoden fans and could serve as an excellent introduction for newcomers if the anime becomes widely accessible.

The second major announcement, however, has sparked more complex reactions. A new game titled "Suikoden Star Leap" was revealed, and it's visually stunning, featuring 2D sprites on 3D backgrounds reminiscent of Octopath Traveler. The game is set a few years before Suikoden 1 and after Suikoden 5, maintaining the series' tradition of including 108 characters.

However, the game is set to launch exclusively on mobile platforms. While this might not be a deal-breaker for die-hard fans, the inclusion of gacha mechanics and ongoing monetization strategies has raised concerns. Historically, the Suikoden series has been known for its premium, console, and PC releases, making this shift somewhat disappointing. It remains to be seen whether these monetization choices will impact the gameplay experience or the ability to collect all 108 characters.

In the meantime, Suikoden enthusiasts can look forward to the re-releases of Suikoden 1 and 2 with the "Suikoden I&II HD Remaster: Gate Rune and Dunan Unification Wars." A new trailer for this collection was showcased during the live event, and it's set to launch tomorrow, March 6.
