Microsoft Unveils and Retracts Xbox UI Mockup with Steam Tab

Author : Isabella May 14,2025

Microsoft has inadvertently revealed a potential new feature for Xbox through a prematurely published blog post titled “Opening a Billion Doors with Xbox.” As reported by The Verge, the post included an image showing Xbox Series X | S consoles alongside other devices, with some screens displaying a "Steam" tab. This unexpected detail, which has since been removed from the post, suggests Microsoft may be developing an Xbox UI update that would allow players to view all PC games installed through various platforms like Steam and the Epic Games Store.

The inclusion of Steam in an official Xbox UI mockup is intriguing, especially since Valve's platform currently doesn't integrate with Microsoft's gaming hardware. According to The Verge, Microsoft is still in the early stages of this project, meaning any potential rollout is likely some time away, if it happens at all.

This development aligns with Microsoft's ongoing efforts to expand its gaming ecosystem across multiple platforms. Over the past decade, Microsoft has increasingly brought its titles to PC and other consoles. Notable examples include Pentiment and Grounded on PS4, PS5, and Nintendo Switch, with rumors suggesting the Master Chief Collection may also come to PlayStation.

Microsoft's strategy to blur the lines between Xbox and PC gaming has been evident in recent initiatives like the “This is an Xbox” campaign, which showcases the variety of devices on which players can enjoy Xbox games. In an interview with Polygon, Xbox head Phil Spencer hinted at a future where platforms like Itch.io and the Epic Games Store could be accessible directly on Xbox hardware.

Furthermore, rumors about Microsoft's next-gen Xbox, expected in 2027, suggest it will resemble a PC more than any previous Xbox, further integrating the two ecosystems.
