This concludes my retro game eShop series, primarily due to dwindling retro consoles with diverse game selections. However, I saved the best for last: the PlayStation. Sony's debut console exceeded expectations, creating a legendary library with enduring appeal, evidenced by continued re-releases. While these titles challenged Nintendo's dominance years ago, today everyone can enjoy them across various platforms. Here are ten favorites (in no particular order):
Klonoa: The Door to Phantomile – Klonoa Phantasy Reverie Series ($39.99)
Klonoa, a deserving yet underrated title, stands out as a successful 2.5D platformer. Play as a charming floppy-eared creature navigating the dream world to thwart a looming threat. Expect vibrant visuals, tight gameplay, engaging bosses, and a surprisingly impactful narrative. While the PlayStation 2 sequel is slightly inferior, both games are a must-have.
Final Fantasy VII ($15.99)
A monumental title, Final Fantasy VII revolutionized the Western RPG market, becoming Square Enix's greatest triumph and a key driver of the PlayStation's success. The remake exists, but this original offers the authentic FFVII experience, albeit with noticeable polygonal limitations. Nevertheless, its enduring appeal remains undeniable.
Metal Gear Solid – Master Collection Version ($19.99)
Another PlayStation giant, Metal Gear Solid revitalized a dormant franchise. While later installments embraced more eccentric elements, the original remains a compelling, action-packed experience reminiscent of G.I. Joe, offering engaging gameplay. The PlayStation 2 sequels are also available on Switch.
G-Darius HD ($29.99)
G-Darius successfully transitioned Taito's classic shooter series into 3D. While the polygonal graphics haven't aged flawlessly, their charm remains intact. The vibrant colors, engaging enemy capture mechanic, and inventive bosses deliver a fantastic shooter experience.
Chrono Cross: The Radical Dreamers Edition ($19.99)
To avoid overwhelming the list with Square Enix titles, I've included only this and Final Fantasy VII. Chrono Cross, while unable to match Chrono Trigger's acclaim, stands on its own as a clever and visually stunning RPG with a large, albeit unevenly developed, cast of characters. It also boasts one of the greatest video game soundtracks ever.
Mega Man X4 – Mega Man X Legacy Collection ($19.99)
While I appreciate most Mega Man games, objectivity suggests recommending only a select few to newcomers. In the Mega Man X series, Mega Man X and Mega Man X4 stand out. X4 exhibits superior cohesion compared to its predecessors. The Legacy Collections offer a chance to judge for yourselves.
Tomba! Special Edition ($19.99)
Sony published many non-owned titles. Tomba! is a unique platformer blending adventure game elements with polished action. The creator's Ghosts ‘n Goblins background is evident in the game's deceptive difficulty.
Grandia – Grandia HD Collection ($39.99)
Originally a SEGA Saturn title, the PlayStation port forms the basis of this HD release. Sharing DNA with Lunar, Grandia offers a vibrant adventure, contrasting with the prevalent Evangelion-influenced RPGs of the time. Its satisfying combat system builds upon Game Arts' Lunar legacy.
Tomb Raider – Tomb Raider I-III Remastered Starring Lara Croft ($29.99)
Lara Croft's PlayStation debut marked the start of five adventures. While quality varied, the original excels with its tomb-raiding focus over action. This collection allows you to decide your favorite among the first three games.
moon ($18.99)
A lesser-known Japanese release, moon deconstructs the RPG genre, offering more of an adventure game experience with a unique, almost "punk" aesthetic. While not consistently fun, its unconventional approach and underlying message are compelling.
This list concludes my series. Share your favorite PlayStation 1 games on the Switch in the comments! Thank you for reading.
