My First Adult LEGO Purchase Was This Mario Set and I Have No Regrets

Author : Joseph Apr 11,2025

As someone who prides myself on being practical with money, my spending habits are quite straightforward. I focus on essentials and occasionally indulge in a video game that's on sale, but that's about where my splurging ends. However, last year marked a shift in my usual spending pattern when I considered purchasing a LEGO set—an item I hadn't thought about since my childhood. Growing up, I loved building LEGO sets, but as I aged, I moved away from them, likely due to their rising costs. LEGO sets, especially those linked to popular movies or video game franchises, can be quite pricey. It took me a while to justify buying the LEGO Super Mario Piranha Plant, which had been on sale since last October for under $50. Eventually, I decided my desk could use a unique potted plant.

  • Lowest Price: $47.95 at Amazon (originally $59.99, save 20%)
  • $47.99 at Walmart (originally $59.99, save 20%)

My interest in the LEGO Super Mario Piranha Plant was piqued after reading IGN's review of the set. Being a long-time fan of the Mario franchise, this set felt like the perfect homage to display on my desk. While LEGO's botanical line offers beautiful flower sets, none capture the whimsical charm and slight terror of the Piranha Plant.

After building the set, I'm thrilled to have it on my desk. It brings me joy to imagine I'm in the Mushroom Kingdom, nurturing my Piranha Plant during work hours. The build process was engaging and challenging, perfectly occupying an afternoon. Currently, it's the only LEGO Nintendo set I own, but my experience has me considering expanding my collection.

How Much Are You Willing to Spend on a LEGO Set You Love?

LEGO sets, especially those aimed at adults, can be a costly hobby. With new sets priced at $200 or more, it's easy to overspend. For me, the LEGO Super Mario Piranha Plant, priced under $50, felt like a justified indulgence. The hours spent building it and the daily joy it brings me are well worth the cost. While I believe this happiness is worth more than $50, that's the limit I set for myself.
