In Avowed's opening moments, the Envoy suffers a tragic assassination. Solving this murder mystery reveals Ygwulf as the killer. The choice then arises: mercy or vengeance. Should you kill Ygwulf?
Ygwulf's Plea for Clemency
After investigating with Kai and Marius in Paradis, you'll uncover Ygwulf, a Paradisan Rebel resisting Aedyr's influence. As the Emperor's Envoy, you're a prime target. Tracking Ygwulf to his underground hideout requires combat and platforming challenges; prepare accordingly. Documents within the hideout (or Ygwulf himself) reveal his remorse; initially believing the Gods commanded the assassination, he later regrets his actions. He's apologetic but prepared to face justice.
The Consequences of Mercy or Surrender
Surrendering Ygwulf to Inquisitor Lödwyn is the least favorable outcome, resulting in a brutal, implied death. This yields fewer rewards than sparing him or killing him. Sparing Ygwulf grants 625 Copper Skeyt and some Adra, a modest reward, but his death is inevitable later in the story.
Why Killing Ygwulf is the Best Option
Given his predetermined death, attacking Ygwulf offers the most advantages. The ensuing boss fight provides valuable combat practice. More importantly, defeating him yields superior loot: currency, Adra, and the unique Blackwing armor. This armor significantly boosts stealth damage (+30%) and increases crouching movement speed (+25%).
Ygwulf's Lasting Impact (Spoiler Warning)
Despite being an early encounter, Ygwulf's fate subtly affects Avowed's ending. Post-game narration depicts the consequences of your choices in Eora's Living Lands. Regardless of your efforts to unify the region, Ygwulf's death radicalizes the Paradisan Rebellion, ensuring their continued violent resistance, even after the credits roll.
