A Borderlands fan's dream comes true: Caleb McAlpine, battling cancer, experiences the magic of Borderlands 4 early.
Gearbox's Heartwarming Gesture
Caleb McAlpine, a devoted Borderlands fan facing a cancer diagnosis, received an unforgettable gift: early access to Borderlands 4. His November 26th Reddit post detailed his incredible journey. Gearbox Software flew him and a friend first-class to their studio, where he met developers, including CEO Randy Pitchford, and played the highly anticipated game.
"We got to play what they have for Borderlands 4 so far and it was amazing," Caleb shared, adding that the experience was "awesome." His trip also included a VIP tour of the Omni Frisco Hotel at The Star, home to the Dallas Cowboys World Headquarters.
While Caleb remained tight-lipped about specific Borderlands 4 details, the impact of the experience was undeniable. He expressed immense gratitude to everyone who supported his request.
A Wish Granted
Caleb's initial plea for early access appeared on Reddit on October 24, 2024. He shared his prognosis – 7-12 months to live, possibly less than two years even with successful chemotherapy – and expressed his earnest desire to play Borderlands 4 before it was too late. His heartfelt request resonated deeply with the Borderlands community.
The outpouring of support led to Gearbox CEO Randy Pitchford responding directly via Twitter (X), promising to explore options. After a month of communication, Gearbox fulfilled Caleb's wish, granting him early access to the game ahead of its 2025 release.
A GoFundMe campaign to support Caleb's fight against cancer has also seen a surge in donations, exceeding $12,415, surpassing its initial goal. The story of his Borderlands 4 experience has touched many hearts and fueled further support for his cause.
