Should You Fight Lu Bu in Dynasty Warriors: Origins?
Engaging Lu Bu in Dynasty Warriors: Origins is a daunting endeavor. In my experience, it took over an hour to defeat him, highlighting the challenge he presents. However, there are compelling reasons to face him. Firstly, defeating Lu Bu earns you bragging rights—a true badge of honor among players. Secondly, depending on your allegiance to Shu or Wei, you may be forced to confront him during the Battle of Xiapi in Chapter 4. Lastly, triumphing over him at the Battle of Hulao Gate not only grants you the "The Strongest" trophy but also unlocks the game's ultimate weapon, the halberd, in the post-game, providing strong incentives to challenge him.
Lu Bu’s First Phase
Preparation is key before facing Lu Bu. Equip a weapon like a sword that can deliver multiple hits and stagger him, along with Battle Arts that are quick to activate, require minimal Bravery, and have a wide range. In my battle, I used Falcon Flurry, Mad Blade Rush, Absconding Slash, and Flying Dragon Slash. Accessories that boost your health and defense, such as Divine Bird’s Wing and Divine Turtle’s Shell, are essential as Lu Bu's attacks can quickly deplete your health. Additionally, choose a weapon with a skill that grants Bravery for each Perfect Evade, as this will be crucial for maintaining your Bravery during the fight.
Initially, Lu Bu will be mounted on his horse, Red Hare. This phase involves him charging around the battlefield. He's swift, but he pauses occasionally to rest. Seize these moments to strike with your Battle Arts before retreating. His attacks have limited area of effect, except for Red Hare's aerial crash, making them relatively easy to dodge. Once his health drops to 80%, Lu Bu dismounts, signaling the start of the real battle.
Lu Bu’s Second Phase
On foot, Lu Bu becomes even more formidable. His attacks are rapid and he moves swiftly across the battlefield, often surrounded by a red aura that makes him immune to staggering. He charges in sets of three, and if he approaches without his spear, he's attempting a grab that can severely damage your health—easily evaded like his other charges.
His most lethal move is signaled by an orange glow, leading to a barrage of three massive arrows fired three times, capable of juggling and devastating your health. To counter this, use a long-range Battle Art like Absconding Slash. Close-quarters Battle Arts like Palm Strike are fatal in this scenario. Keep your Musou gauge charged for emergency invincibility, which can be a lifesaver if you misjudge a dodge or get caught in a combo.
Lu Bu is surprisingly vulnerable to juggling in this phase. Continuous attacks can quickly charge your Battle Arts and deplete his Fortitude meter. Stay close to react swiftly to his moves, and remember: evasion is your best friend.
Lu Bu’s Final Phase
When Lu Bu's health is sufficiently reduced, he enters Musou Rage, marking the final phase. Now unstaggered, he unleashes a relentless barrage of attacks. Your objective is to break his Fortitude before he executes his Musou Attack. Use all your remaining resources—activate Musou attacks when he's near, deploy Battle Arts, and strike with speed and precision. If he completes his Musou Attack, he'll immediately reactivate it, forcing you to restart the phase. Successfully breaking his Fortitude here will allow you to defeat this legendary adversary.
And that’s how to defeat Lu Bu in Dynasty Warriors: Origins! The game is now available for PS5, PC, and Xbox Series X/S.
