In *Monster Hunter Wilds*, every beast presents its own unique challenge, but Rompopolo stands out as one of the most intriguing encounters. First appearing in Chapter 2 during Mission 2-1: Toward Fervent Fields, this Brute Wyvern makes its dramatic entrance as you travel to Azuz City through the Oilwell Basin. Defeating Rompopolo is essential to progress, and after your initial victory, its entry will be added to your Large Monster Field Guide. From there, you can hunt it repeatedly either by exploring the Oilwell Basin or by taking on the “Oilwell Basin Blast” Optional Quest.

Rompopolo can be encountered early in your adventure, but to stand a fighting chance, you’ll want to equip gear suited to the task. Water-element weapons, such as those obtained from Uth Duna in the Scarlet Forest, are highly recommended. Additionally, fire-resistant armor is crucial, which can be sourced from Uth Duna (initially belts and greaves) or Ajarakan later in the chapter. Crafting a dedicated Talisman, like the Fire Charm I or a general Defense Charm I, can further bolster your defenses. Don’t forget to cook a hearty meal to maximize your health and stamina before heading into battle.

Rompopolo’s unique physiology grants it a diverse array of attacks, making it both formidable and fascinating. Its saggy skin inflates with gas, fueling explosive and poisonous maneuvers. Keep an eye out for its gas-based attacks, which can cause both damage and poison status effects. Always carry antidotes to counteract the latter, and remember that your Palico can assist with cleansing ailments.
Here’s a breakdown of its key moves:
- Arm Swipe: A straightforward double swipe with its clawed arms. Easily dodged due to its limited reach.
- Lunge with Arm Swipe: Rompopolo charges forward while swiping its arms in an arc. Stay mobile to avoid this.
- Tail Swing: A direct strike from its tail. Watch for its movements to sidestep this attack.
- Poison Stream or Swipe: Sprays poison gas or charges while spraying poison in a sweeping motion. Maintain distance when possible.
- Oil Explosion: Injects gas into oil pools, triggering explosions underfoot. Move quickly to evade.
- Charged Oil Explosion: Later in the fight, Rompopolo intensifies its gas output, causing larger explosions. Dodge carefully.
Should You Kill or Capture Rompopolo?

As in past Monster Hunter titles, you have the option to either kill or capture Rompopolo. Capturing requires weakening it until your Palico notes it’s nearly incapacitated, then luring it into a trap (Shock or Pitfall) and knocking it unconscious with Tranq Bombs.
Both methods yield valuable resources, though the rewards may vary slightly depending on your approach. Below are the potential item drops from Rompopolo, categorized by low and high ranks.
