Disney's Snow White Remake Struggles to Break Even Post Box Office Slump

Author : Logan Jul 08,2026

Snow White has faced a challenging opening weekend at the box office, recording one of the lowest domestic totals among Disney’s recent remakes to date.

Data from Comscore for Marc Webb’s Snow White (director behind The Amazing Spider-Man 1 and 2) indicates a $43 million debut in North America. This ranks as the second-highest opening of 2025 so far, trailing only the MCU release Captain America: Brave New World, allowing it to claim this week's top spot. However, it falls short of live-action Dumbo’s domestic launch gross of $45 million in 2019 and underperformed initial projections.

To put this into perspective, Disney’s previous live-action adaptations—including 2019’s The Lion King, 2017’s Beauty and the Beast, 2016’s The Jungle Book, and 2023’s The Little Mermaid—all opened with domestic totals exceeding $100 million.

The film also experienced a relatively modest international start, bringing in $44.3 million during its opening weekend globally. According to Comscore estimates, this results in a combined worldwide gross of $87.3 million at the box office so far.

Snow White is a live-action adaptation of Disney’s beloved 1937 animated feature, starring musical theatre star Rachel Zegler as the titular character and Gal Gadot (Wonder Woman) as the Evil Queen. With a reported production budget exceeding $250 million, the film now faces an uphill struggle to break even based on its opening numbers, particularly when factoring in extensive marketing expenses.

There may be some optimism for Snow White’s future performance. Disney’s Lion King prequel, Mufasa: The Lion King, opened domestically with a modest $35.4 million in December but ultimately grossed over $717 million worldwide. Industry observers are hoping Snow White follows a similar "sleeper hit" trajectory as questions continue to mount regarding the performance of Captain America: Brave New World.

Captain America has currently accumulated a global box office total of $400.8 million ($192.1 million domestically and $208.7 million internationally) following six weeks in theaters.

IGN’s review for Snow White awarded it a score of 7/10, stating: “Snow White is a live-action Disney remake that meaningfully adapts its original source material, rather than creating a lesser mimicry.”
