George R.R. Martin, author of A Song of Ice and Fire, has declared his enthusiasm for the upcoming Game of Thrones prequel, A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms, calling it "as faithful an adaptation as one could reasonably expect."
In a recent blog post, Martin revealed that HBO has completed filming the six-episode series and remains on schedule for a release later this year, possibly in the fall. Unlike the previous spin-off, House of the Dragon, Martin expressed strong approval.
"Having viewed all six episodes (the final two in rough cuts), I was captivated," Martin wrote. "Dunk and Egg have always held a special place in my heart, and the actors portraying them are simply phenomenal. The entire cast delivers outstanding performances. You'll be especially impressed by the Laughing Storm and Tanselle Too-Tall."
The series adapts The Hedge Knight, the first novella in the Dunk and Egg series. Martin assures fans of its faithfulness to the source material, acknowledging his own (often humorous) reputation for meticulousness in adaptations.
He cautioned, however, that viewers seeking constant action may be disappointed. "While there's a spectacular fight sequence, dragons, large-scale battles, and White Walkers are absent," he explained. "It's a character-driven story, emphasizing duty, honor, and the essence of chivalry."
A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms stars Peter Claffey as Ser Duncan the Tall (Dunk) and Dexter Sol Ansell as Prince Aegon Targaryen (Egg). Although the premiere is still months away, HBO has already shared several images and a short teaser trailer.
Martin concluded his post with a playful reference to his long-awaited novel, The Winds of Winter, stating his intention to adapt the second Dunk & Egg novella, The Sworn Sword, followed by The Mystery Knight and others, once The Winds of Winter is complete.
