Big changes are coming for Netflix Games subscribers who enjoy Grand Theft Auto on Android. GTA III and GTA Vice City are leaving the Netflix Games platform next month.
Why the Departure? License Expiration.
This isn't a surprise move. Netflix licenses games similarly to how it licenses movies and TV shows. The licenses for GTA III and GTA Vice City are expiring. A "Leaving Soon" tag will appear on the games before they're removed.
These GTA titles joined Netflix Games exactly one year ago, reflecting a 12-month licensing agreement with Rockstar Games. After December 13th, Netflix subscribers will no longer have access. If you're currently playing, it's time to finish up your adventures in Liberty City and Vice City. However, San Andreas remains available for now.
Future of GTA on Mobile?
If you haven't completed these games, they're readily available on the Google Play Store. The Definitive Editions of Grand Theft Auto III and Vice City are each $4.99, or you can purchase the entire trilogy for $11.99.
Unlike last year's sudden removal of Samurai Shodown V and WrestleQuest, Netflix is giving players advance notice. It's interesting that Rockstar isn't renewing, considering Netflix's subscriber growth in 2023 was partly attributed to the GTA trilogy.
Rumors suggest Rockstar and Netflix are collaborating on potential remastered versions of Liberty City Stories, Vice City Stories, and even Chinatown Wars. Let's hope this rumor proves true!
