Helldivers 2 Creative Director Dreams of Epic Crossovers, But Prioritizes Game Integrity
Johan Pilestedt, creative director of Helldivers 2, recently revealed his wish list for potential game crossovers, sparking excitement among fans. While he's expressed a fondness for collaborations with franchises like Starship Troopers, Terminator, Warhammer 40,000, Alien, Predator, Star Wars, and even Blade Runner, he's also emphasized the importance of maintaining the game's unique satirical, militaristic identity.
The discussion began with a playful exchange on Twitter regarding a crossover with the tabletop game, Trench Crusade. While initially enthusiastic, Pilestedt later cautioned that the reality of such collaborations presents significant challenges.
Trench Crusade, a skirmish wargame set in an alternate World War I with warring heavenly and hellish forces, seemed a natural fit, but Pilestedt clarified that his initial suggestions were "fun musings," not concrete plans. He acknowledged the appeal of crossovers, particularly in the live-service game market, but stressed that including too many would dilute Helldivers 2's core identity.
Pilestedt remains open to both large and small crossover elements, such as individual weapons or character skins acquired through in-game currency. However, he reiterated that these are personal preferences and no decisions have been finalized.
This cautious approach is appreciated by many who value the game's cohesive universe. While the prospect of Helldivers facing Xenomorphs alongside Jango Fett or the Terminator is intriguing, the developers' priority remains preserving the unique tone and experience of Helldivers 2. The future of crossovers in the game remains uncertain, but the developers' commitment to preserving the game's integrity is clear.
