Sony's CES 2025 presentation delivered unexpected entertainment announcements, most notably confirming a Helldivers 2 feature film currently in development. The movie represents a collaboration between Sony Productions and Sony Pictures. While details remain scarce, PlayStation Productions head Asad Qizilbash revealed during the event: "We're excited to partner with Sony Pictures to bring our wildly successful PlayStation title Helldivers 2 to the big screen."
A Surprising Adaptation Choice
Developed by Arrowhead Games, Helldivers 2 draws heavy inspiration from the cult classic Starship Troopers. The game portrays futuristic soldiers defending Super Earth's fascist regime against Automaton robots and Terminid insects, all while ironically promoting "Managed Democracy." Given the clear cinematic influences, fans have questioned the need for a Helldivers adaptation - especially when the source material remains readily available.
Arrowhead's Limited Creative Involvement
Arrowhead CCO Johan Pilestedt addressed fan concerns about creative control via social media, confirming the studio would have some - but not final - input. "We'll provide consultation, but recognize filmmaking requires different expertise," Pilestedt stated. "While we created the game universe, Hollywood professionals should lead the adaptation process."
Helldivers 2 continues breaking records as PlayStation's fastest-selling title, having moved 12 million units in just three months. The game recently received renewed attention following its major Illuminate update, which introduced a brand new enemy faction.
Sony's CES showcase also revealed plans for a Horizon Zero Dawn film adaptation and Ghost of Tsushima anime series, extending their aggressive push into video game adaptations. This expansion follows the tremendous success of HBO's The Last of Us, whose second season premieres this April.
