Lionsgate has exciting news for fans of classic board games: the upcoming Monopoly movie has found its writers in the talented duo John Francis Daley and Jonathan Goldstein, who previously brought us the delightful Dungeons & Dragons: Honor Among Thieves. Announced today, Daley and Goldstein are set to craft the screenplay for this film, inspired by Hasbro's iconic board game. Adding to the anticipation, the film will be produced by none other than Margot Robbie through her production company, LuckyChap.
Daley and Goldstein have been on a roll lately, not only with Honor Among Thieves but also with their original film, Mayday. Their writing talents have also shone in major superhero films like The Flash and Spider-Man: Homecoming, showcasing their versatility and creativity in storytelling.
The journey to bring Monopoly to the big screen has been a long one, with discussions dating back to 2007 when Ridley Scott showed interest in directing. Subsequent attempts included a script by Scott Alexander and Larry Karaszewski in 2011, and another version penned by Andrew Niccol in 2015, with Kevin Hart and Tim Story attached in 2019. However, none of these efforts came to fruition.
The current project gained new momentum with Lionsgate's acquisition of eOne from Hasbro, sparking fresh enthusiasm and hope that this version of the Monopoly movie will finally "pass Go" and captivate audiences worldwide.
