During today's Mario Kart World Direct, fans were treated to an in-depth look at the game's exciting new Free Roam mode. This mode promises to be highly multiplayer-focused and offers players the chance to explore the expansive world of Mario Kart World in a way that's never been possible before in the series.
Although we had the opportunity to go hands-on with Mario Kart World last week, it wasn't until today's Direct that we got a comprehensive understanding of the Free Roam mode. This innovative feature allows players to freely navigate the game's vast, Forza Horizon-inspired world map. Unlike previous Mario Kart titles, where race tracks are isolated and only accessible during races, Mario Kart World integrates these tracks into its open world. This means players can seamlessly transition from one track to another and enjoy the freedom to explore the areas in between during certain game modes. In Free Roam mode, when you're not competing in races, you can embark on a mini-adventure. The world is dotted with hidden collectibles such as coins and ? panels, though the specific benefits of collecting these items remain a mystery for now. Players can also encounter P-Switches, which trigger unique challenges like collecting blue coins.
Moreover, Free Roam mode introduces a Photo Mode, enabling players to capture stunning images of their racers in a variety of poses and settings. This mode isn't limited to solo play; you can join up with friends to explore the world together, take photos, tackle challenges, or simply hang out. Free Roam supports up to four players on a single system via split-screen, or up to eight players using local wireless play, with two players per system.
The Mario Kart World Direct also unveiled other exciting additions, including new characters, courses, and modes. To stay updated on all the announcements, you can find more information right here.
