Capcom Producer Hints at Marvel vs. Capcom 2 Character Returns in Future Fighting Games
Capcom producer Shuhei Matsumoto has fueled speculation about the return of beloved original characters from Marvel vs. Capcom 2 in future Capcom fighting games. Speaking at EVO 2024, Matsumoto stated that the possibility of their return in "a new game" is "always there."
This renewed interest stems from the upcoming release of the Marvel vs. Capcom Fighting Collection: Arcade Classics, a remastered collection of classic games in the series, including Marvel vs. Capcom 2. This collection features three original characters: Amingo, Ruby Heart, and SonSon, largely absent from recent iterations beyond minor cameos.
Matsumoto emphasized that the collection's release provides a prime opportunity to reintroduce these characters to a wider audience. He suggested that a strong fan response could even lead to their inclusion in titles outside the Versus series, such as Street Fighter 6. "If there's enough interest," he stated, "they could appear in Street Fighter 6 or another fighting game." This, he added, would provide a boost to Capcom's creative resources.
The Marvel vs. Capcom Fighting Collection itself has been in development for several years, requiring extensive collaboration with Marvel. Matsumoto also expressed Capcom's desire to create a new Versus title and re-release other legacy fighting games on modern platforms with updated features like rollback netcode. However, he cautioned that these projects depend on various factors, including scheduling and collaboration with external partners.
The producer concluded by highlighting the importance of re-releasing classic titles to engage the community and gauge interest for future projects. The success of the Marvel vs. Capcom Fighting Collection will undoubtedly play a significant role in shaping Capcom's future plans for the franchise and the potential return of its beloved original characters.
