NetEase Games is making significant adjustments to the Marvel Rivals post-launch roadmap to enhance the live service experience for its players. The company has decided to shorten the duration of seasons from three months to two months, promising to introduce at least one new hero every month. This shift was hinted at during the Marvel Rivals Season 2 Dev Vision Vol. 5 video, a 15-minute presentation that detailed the upcoming content for Season 2.
Season 2, set to launch on April 11, will introduce Emma Frost as the new Vanguard character. Mid-season, players can look forward to Ultron, whose class will be disclosed closer to his release. Both heroes are expected to bring fresh abilities and excitement to the game, but the real transformation in gameplay dynamics is slated to start with Season 3.
Although Season 3 does not yet have a confirmed release date, it will mark the beginning of the accelerated content schedule. The quicker turnaround between seasons and hero releases will keep the game's momentum going strong. For instance, after Emma Frost's debut, players will only have to wait a month and a half to play as Ultron, with subsequent hero releases following at a faster pace.
In the Dev Vision video, Marvel Rivals creative director Guangyun Chen discussed the reasoning behind these changes. "Since the launch of Season 1, we’ve been deeply contemplating how Marvel Rivals can continuously deliver fun and engaging experiences for you all," Chen said. He acknowledged the pressure from social media discussions and the need to maintain the game's initial excitement. "With our goal of keeping the audience’s excitement alive just like our opening months, the real adventure with Marvel Rivals is just beginning."
Chen emphasized NetEase's commitment to fulfilling players' fantasies about Marvel Super Heroes, which involves introducing new modes and expanding the character roster. The company has undertaken extensive internal discussions and evaluations to adjust its systems for the increased content flow. More details on how these changes will impact gameplay will be shared before Season 3's launch.
Just hours ago, NetEase pulled back the curtain on Marvel Rivals Season 2, revealing a shift from the vampire takeover theme to a new Hellfire Gala storyline. This change will bring new outfits, maps, and characters, with more information set to be released in the coming weeks.
Since its explosive launch in December, Marvel Rivals has garnered immense popularity, reaching 10 million players within three days. The game, available on PC via Steam and the Epic Games Store, PlayStation 5, and Xbox Series X and S, saw a peak of 480,990 concurrent players on Steam at launch. Season 1 in January further boosted the game's popularity, with 644,269 concurrent players, making it the 15th most-played game on Steam.
Despite a slight decline in concurrent players since then, Marvel Rivals remains a top contender on Steam. The upcoming Season 2 and the planned Season 3 are expected to reinvigorate the player base and maintain the game's momentum.
