Minecraft Creator Hints at a Spiritual Successor: Minecraft 2 on the Horizon?
Markus "Notch" Persson, the original creator of Minecraft, has ignited excitement among fans by suggesting a potential "spiritual successor" to his iconic creation. Details about this possible Minecraft 2 are emerging, but the path forward remains intriguing.
Notch recently conducted a poll on X (formerly Twitter), outlining two potential projects: a roguelike/dungeon crawler hybrid and a game described as a "spiritual successor to Minecraft." The latter option overwhelmingly won, garnering 81.5% of the votes. Given Minecraft's enduring popularity (with an estimated 45-50 million daily players), this result isn't surprising.
In a subsequent post, Notch confirmed his seriousness, stating he had "basically announced Minecraft 2." He expressed a desire to revisit his passion projects, acknowledging the potential for another Minecraft-like game. However, he emphasized his respect for Mojang Studios and Microsoft, the current owners of the Minecraft IP. He assured fans that any new project would avoid infringing on their work.
Notch also voiced concerns about the challenges of creating spiritual successors, acknowledging the risks involved. Despite these reservations, the overwhelmingly positive response to the poll seems to have swayed him towards prioritizing a Minecraft-inspired title.
While fans eagerly await this potential "Minecraft 2," they can look forward to other Minecraft-related projects in the meantime. These include Minecraft-themed amusement parks slated for the UK and US in 2026 and 2027, and a live-action film, "A Minecraft Movie," set for release later in 2025.
