MultiVersus Season 5: Gameplay Overhaul Praised Before Shutdown

Author : Mia Mar 13,2025

MultiVersus is slated to shut down after Season 5 ends in May, but a recent update dramatically altering combat speed has ignited a surge of renewed player enthusiasm and even sparked a #SaveMultiVersus social media campaign.

The Warner Bros. platform fighter's community eagerly launched into its fifth and final season on February 4th, 9 am PT. While developer Player First Games had previously announced the game's closure, teasing Aquaman and Lola Bunny as the final playable characters, the update delivered significant gameplay changes. These changes, resulting in a significantly faster-paced experience, represent a fundamental shift players had requested for years – a bittersweet irony given the game's impending demise.

Player First's Season 5 Combat Changes Preview video on X/Twitter highlighted the sped-up combat. The difference is stark; characters execute combos and traverse the screen with unprecedented speed. This marks a considerable departure from the floaty gameplay criticized during the 2022 beta and even surpasses the speed seen in last year's relaunch.

Patch notes reveal that the increased combat speed stems from a reduction in hit pause across most attacks. This accelerates combo execution for all characters, with several receiving additional speed adjustments. Morty, LeBron, Iron Giant, Bugs Bunny, Black Adam, and others feel noticeably faster due to changes enabling faster falls during certain aerial attacks. Garnet's adjustments balance her impact, enhancing ground ringout potential while reducing aerial ringout capabilities.

MultiVersus Season 5 transforms the nearly year-old game, offering players far more than just two new characters. However, this enhanced experience is fleeting. The game will shut down on May 30th, ending seasonal content and removing it from digital storefronts. Only offline modes will remain.

This leaves fans shocked and frustrated, having finally received the improved gameplay they desired just as the game is ending. X user @PJiggles\_ aptly described MultiVersus as "the most interesting bad game in existence," highlighting its beta, 2024 relaunch, and sudden gameplay overhaul. Professional player Mew2King questioned the timing of the speed increase on Player First's post.

One Reddit user commented, "I know everybody's been playing the blame game...but man, if this was how the relaunch started off we could’ve really had something. (Apex Legends) is probably one of the worst monetization schemes out there but it lasted so long because it nailed the fundamentals at the start.”

Another Reddit user, Desperate\_Method4032, stated the Season 5 update fixed "every issue I had with the game," praising improvements like shield animations. Despite the impending shutdown, they expressed hope for a potential reversal, stating, "Just a fan with tons of love for the characters showcased in this game. But is it so wrong to have just LITTLE bit of hope that the game will make a comeback? There's just far too much potential to let things end like this."

Despite player hopes, Player First and Warner Bros. remain committed to the shutdown. Game director Tony Huynh shared closing thoughts and addressed player concerns on X. Real-money transactions were disabled on January 31st, and the Season 5 premium battle pass is free. MultiVersus will cease service at 9 am PT on May 30th.

While the shutdown proceeds, players find solace in creating and sharing memes. It's a bittersweet situation, with the community celebrating a finally improved game just before its end.
