Fuji Television Network, a major Japanese broadcaster, has ceased airing Nintendo advertisements following a sexual misconduct scandal involving Masahiro Nakai, a prominent television personality and former member of the popular J-Pop group SMAP.
The scandal erupted in December 2024 when Josei Seven magazine reported a high-level Fuji TV employee arranged a dinner for colleagues, which, according to Weekly Bunshun, was ultimately attended only by Nakai and a single woman. Subsequent accusations of sexual assault against Nakai led to an out-of-court settlement reportedly totaling 90 million yen (approximately $578,000).
Fuji TV has initiated an independent investigation into the matter, prompted by concerns regarding an alleged company practice of using female presenters to entertain male celebrities.
Nintendo's decision follows a similar move by approximately 50 other companies, including Toyota and Kao Corporation, who have previously withdrawn their advertising from Fuji TV. Nintendo's advertising slots will now feature public service announcements provided by the Advertising Council Japan (AC Japan).
This action by Nintendo has garnered significant public approval in Japan. Many X platform users voiced their support and expressed hope that businesses will continue to prioritize ethical conduct.
