Recent filings with the Federal Communications Commission (FCC) have shed light on some exciting features of the upcoming Nintendo Switch 2, including support for Near Field Communication (NFC). This means that fans can look forward to using their Amiibo figures with the next-gen console. The NFC functionality is integrated into the right Joy-Con, mirroring the original Switch's design. However, it remains to be seen whether the Switch 2 will be compatible with existing Amiibo figures and their in-game content.
In addition to NFC, the FCC filings confirm that the Switch 2 can be charged through either a bottom or a new top USB-C port, a feature that was hinted at during the console's official reveal. The Switch 2 also supports Wi-Fi 6 (802.11ax) networks with up to 80MHz of bandwidth, an upgrade from the original Switch's Wi-Fi 5 (802.11ac) capabilities. There is no mention of support for Wi-Fi 7 or Wi-Fi 6E in the filings, as noted by The Verge.
Regarding power, the Switch 2 remains rated for a maximum of 15V, but the filings also reference an AC adapter that can handle up to 20V. This leaves the actual charging speed of the console a mystery for now.
A recent Nintendo patent suggests that the Switch 2's Joy-Con controllers may feature a unique design allowing them to be attached upside down. This innovative approach uses magnets instead of the traditional rails, enabling the Joy-Cons to be positioned on either side of the console. This flexibility could influence gameplay mechanics and allow players to customize the placement of buttons and ports to their liking.

If the Switch 2 adopts the patented Joy-Con design, Nintendo is expected to elaborate on this feature during a special Nintendo Direct event scheduled for 6am Pacific / 9am Eastern / 2pm UK time on April 2.
While Nintendo has not yet confirmed a release window for the Switch 2, speculation points to a launch between June and September. This speculation is fueled by upcoming hands-on events scheduled until June and statements from Greedfall 2 publisher Nacon suggesting the console will be available before September.
The Nintendo Switch 2 was unveiled in January with a trailer that confirmed backwards compatibility features and the addition of a second USB-C port. However, many details, such as the full list of games and the function of the mysterious new Joy-Con button, remain undisclosed. The Joy-Con mouse theory has gained traction among fans, adding to the anticipation surrounding the console's release.
