The Nvidia RTX 5090 and RTX 5080 are set to launch on January 30th, but reports from retailers and manufacturers suggest significant shortages are likely. With consumers already lining up outside stores, these high-end GPUs, priced at $1,999 and $999 respectively, are generating immense anticipation.
Manufacturer MSI, citing the Lunar New Year, has acknowledged limited initial stock of the new GPUs, anticipating supply stabilization in February. This concern is echoed by retailers. Overclockers UK reports receiving only a few units of the RTX 5090 and a limited supply of RTX 5080 cards. PowerGPU similarly predicts extremely low availability for the RTX 5090 launch.
In response to growing concerns, Nvidia's Tim@Nvidia issued a statement acknowledging high demand and the potential for stock-outs, assuring consumers that additional stock is being shipped daily.
Despite Nvidia's statement, the limited supply has already attracted scalpers. eBay listings show pre-sale offers for the RTX 5090 at exorbitant prices—one Asus ROG Astral RTX 5090 is listed for $5,750, a massive markup of 187% over its MSRP.
Adding to Nvidia's challenges, a recent emergence of a Chinese AI model, DeepSeek, trained at a significantly lower cost than Nvidia's solutions, caused a 16.86% drop in Nvidia's share price on Monday, potentially impacting the company's priorities this week.
