Osmos, the acclaimed cell-absorbing puzzle game, returns to Android! Previously removed due to playability issues stemming from outdated technology, developer Hemisphere Games has resurrected it with a completely revamped port.
For those unfamiliar, Osmos is a unique, award-winning puzzle where you absorb smaller organisms while avoiding becoming prey. Its simple yet engaging premise made it a hit, but Android users were left in the cold—until now.
Years after its 2010 debut, Osmos is back on Google Play, optimized for modern Android systems. Experience this micro-organic battle royale like never before!
Hemisphere Games explains in a blog post that initial Android development, aided by Apportable, was hampered by the latter's closure, preventing further updates. This led to the game's removal due to incompatibility with current Android versions (only running on obsolete 32-bit systems). The new release features a completely rebuilt port.
A Cellular Masterpiece
If our enthusiastic reviews of Osmos (both iOS and Android) or its numerous awards haven't convinced you, the gameplay trailer above should seal the deal. Osmos' innovative mechanics have, ironically through a process of osmosis, influenced countless subsequent games. Its pre-social media release is almost a missed opportunity; it would undoubtedly be a TikTok sensation today.
Osmos feels like a nostalgic gem, well worth revisiting. It represents a bygone era of mobile gaming potential, an era many hope to see return.
