Assassin's Creed Shadows, slated for a March 20, 2025 release, has suffered a significant leak. Gameplay footage and images surfaced online via social media and auction sites, a month ahead of schedule. While these posts and Twitch streams have since been removed, the damage is done, according to reports from VGC and TheGamer. Ubisoft has yet to officially comment.

This leak is a further setback for Ubisoft, who have faced numerous challenges with Assassin's Creed Shadows since its announcement. Despite these hurdles, Ubisoft has previously claimed strong preorder numbers, comparing them favorably to Assassin's Creed Odyssey. CEO Yves Guillemot expressed confidence, highlighting positive early previews praising the narrative, immersive experience, and the dual protagonist approach. He also commended the development team's dedication to delivering the franchise's "most ambitious entry yet."
The game's release has been delayed multiple times, originally planned for November, then February 14th, before settling on the current March 20th date. The pressure is immense; Assassin's Creed Shadows is not only the long-awaited Japan-set installment and the first full Assassin's Creed game since 2020, but also a crucial title for a struggling Ubisoft facing investor concerns after recent underperforming releases.
The promotional period has been far from smooth, marked by apologies for historical inaccuracies in the game's depiction of Japan, unauthorized use of a historical recreation group's flag, and the removal of a "insensitive" collectible statue by PureArts.
