Like a Dragon: Pirate Yakuza in Hawaii is poised to blend serious drama with comedic flair, according to developer RGG Studio. Dive in to discover the unique elements that will be featured in the game!
Featuring "Serious" Majima
The latest addition to the renowned Like a Dragon series is set to stretch the limits of reality while delivering a "manly drama" storyline, as shared by RGG Studio in an interview with Automaton Media.
While the series is celebrated for its humor and gags, with Majima often cited as one of the funniest characters, RGG Studio director Masayoshi Yokoyama has revealed that this iteration of Majima will adopt a "more serious" tone, particularly at the story's outset.
Ryosuke Horii, the producer of Pirate Yakuza in Hawaii, elaborated on Yokoyama's remarks, emphasizing the presence of a "manly drama" at the heart of the game. This narrative showcases Majima's passionate journey towards his goals and the bonds he forms along the way. "The goofing off isn’t the main focus – there’s a manly drama at the core of things. Of course, there are some wild detours, but overall, it’s a straightforward tale about a passionate man," Horii explained.
Horii further highlighted Majima's unique qualities, which differentiate him from the series' long-time protagonist, Kazuma Kiryu. As translated by Automaton, "If we didn’t leverage that uniqueness, there would be no reason to make Majima the main character. That’s why we pushed the boundaries of reality more than we would with Kiryu, aiming to offer players a diverse and rich action experience. ... Balancing the pirate elements, Majima's essence, and the 'Ryu ga Gotoku' spirit was a challenging yet rewarding endeavor."
The game promises to strike the perfect balance between realism and extravagance, with the team committed to ensuring the gameplay is "wilder," while still maintaining a serious and compelling drama.
Majima Maji Festival In Japan
In celebration of the game's upcoming release, RGG Studio is hosting a special themed event, Majima's Maji Festival, across six cities in Japan. The festival kicked off on December 1, 2024, in Sapporo and is nearing its conclusion, with stops in Nagoya on January 18th and Tokyo on January 25th.
