Sony's Unveiling of a New AAA Game Studio in Los Angeles
A recently published job posting confirms Sony's establishment of a new AAA game studio in Los Angeles, California. This marks Sony's 20th first-party studio and adds to its already impressive lineup of renowned developers. The studio is currently shrouded in secrecy, but is confirmed to be working on a groundbreaking, original AAA IP for the PS5.
The news has generated considerable excitement among PlayStation fans, who eagerly anticipate updates on future titles from established studios like Santa Monica Studio, Naughty Dog, and Insomniac Games. Sony's strategic acquisitions of studios like Housemarque, Bluepoint Games, and Firesprite in recent years have further fueled this anticipation.
Speculation Surrounding the Studio's Origins
Several theories attempt to identify the personnel behind this new studio. One possibility involves a spin-off team from Bungie, stemming from the July 2024 layoffs where 155 Bungie employees transitioned to Sony Interactive Entertainment. This team, reportedly working on Bungie's "Gummybears" project, could be the core of the new Los Angeles studio.
Another strong contender is the team led by Jason Blundell, a veteran Call of Duty developer and co-founder of the now-defunct Deviation Games. Following Deviation Games' closure in March 2024, many of its employees joined PlayStation, suggesting Blundell's team might be the driving force behind this new venture. Given the longer gestation period of Blundell's team compared to the Bungie spin-off, this theory holds significant weight. The new studio's project might even be a continuation or reboot of Deviation Games' previously unannounced AAA title.
Regardless of its origins, the existence of this new studio assures fans of another exciting PlayStation first-party game in development, although an official announcement from Sony may still be some time away.
