Pokémon Mystery Dungeon Red Rescue Team Joins Nintendo Switch Online + Expansion Pack
Available on August 9
Nintendo is set to enrich the Switch's Expansion Pack classic games catalog with another cherished Pokémon title. Pokémon Mystery Dungeon: Red Rescue Team will be available on the Nintendo Switch Online + Expansion Pack service starting August 9. This announcement brings a beloved Pokémon spin-off to the Expansion Pack, offering access to a curated library of games from Nintendo 64, Game Boy Advance, and Sega Genesis.
Originally launched worldwide for the Game Boy Advance in 2006, Pokémon Mystery Dungeon: Red Rescue Team is a roguelike game where players assume the role of a human transformed into a Pokémon. The adventure involves exploring dungeons and embarking on missions to solve the mystery behind their transformation. Alongside the Game Boy Advance version, a Blue Rescue Team was released for the Nintendo DS, and in 2020, the game was remade for the Switch as Pokémon Mystery Dungeon: Rescue Team DX.
Pokémon Fans Advocate for Mainline Games on NSO Expansion Pack
While the Nintendo Switch Online + Expansion Pack service regularly updates its game lineup, it has only included Pokémon spin-offs like Pokémon Snap and Pokémon Puzzle League, which has left some fans wanting more. Many in the Pokémon community are eager for mainline titles, such as Pokémon Red and Blue, to be added to the Expansion Pack. Despite this demand, Nintendo has yet to signal any plans to include mainline games.
Fans have speculated on potential reasons for the absence of mainline games, including issues with N64 Transfer Pak compatibility, challenges with the NSO infrastructure, and complications with integrating the Switch's Pokémon Home app. As Nintendo does not fully own the app, partnership agreements might pose integration challenges. A fan theorized, "I'd guess they want to ensure there's trading and that the trading can't be exploited."
