The Pokémon Company has confirmed competitive play won't be coming to Pokémon TCG Pocket anytime soon. Here's why the digital card game isn't joining the official tournament circuit yet.
Pokémon TCG Pocket Excluded From Tournament Play
Official Statement on Competitive Exclusion
The Pokémon Company has confirmed competitive play won't be coming to Pokémon TCG Pocket in the near future. Pokémon's Director of eSports Chris Brown stated during a February 25, 2025 interview with VGC that while they regularly evaluate new titles for competitive inclusion, Pokémon TCG Pocket isn't currently under consideration.
With humorous reference to their April Fool's joke about a Pokémon Sleep tournament, Brown quipped "Pokemon Sleep is out there too," before clarifying "At this time there are no plans for Pokemon Pocket to join, but we're always evaluating opportunities."
Development Stage and Balance Concerns
While official reasons remain unconfirmed, community speculation points to the game's early development stage (launched October 2024 with only two sets released) and ongoing balance adjustments as likely factors. Despite built-in competitive features, players continue requesting gameplay refinements from developers.
As a streamlined version of the physical TCG designed for accessibility, Pokémon TCG Pocket wasn't developed with high-level competition as a primary focus. The official tournament circuit will instead feature Pokémon TCG, Pokémon GO, Pokémon Scarlet and Violet, and Pokémon Unite at August 2025's Pokémon World Championships in Anaheim.
