Skyblivion, the ambitious fan-made project that reimagines The Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion using The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim's engine, is gearing up for a 2025 release. This monumental undertaking, crafted by a dedicated team of volunteer developers, represents a AAA-scale modding effort that has consumed years of meticulous work.
In a recent developer update stream, the Skyblivion team not only showcased their progress but also reaffirmed their commitment to a 2025 launch. "We hope with your support to finish the final steps in completing our dream, maybe even beating our own estimation," they optimistically stated.

Calling Skyblivion a mere one-to-one remake might not do justice to the extensive enhancements being made. The developers are not only recreating the original game but are also overhauling various elements. This includes ensuring that unique items truly stand out and enhancing existing bosses to match their fearsome reputations, with particular attention to characters like Mannimarco. The team's livestream featured the revamped "A Brush with Death" quest, showcasing a beautifully reimagined painted world.
The project's intrigue is heightened by the whispers of an official Oblivion remake. Earlier this year, alleged details emerged about potential changes to combat and other aspects of the game. Microsoft, however, remained tight-lipped when approached by IGN for comment. Moreover, a 2023 document leak during the Activision Blizzard/FTC trial hinted at an Oblivion remaster, alongside other projects like an Indiana Jones game, which has since been released. Yet, the Oblivion and Fallout 3 remasters remain unconfirmed.
Given the vibrant modding community that Bethesda's games have fostered—from classics to the latest titles like Starfield—the looming possibility of an official Oblivion relaunch casts a shadow over Skyblivion. The fan project's future could be uncertain, especially considering the challenges faced by other mods like Fallout London right before their launch. Nonetheless, the Skyblivion team remains hopeful and focused on bringing their vision to fruition by 2025.
