Paramount Pictures has announced that Sonic the Hedgehog 4 will zoom onto the big screen on March 19, 2027, according to Variety. This gives fans a two-year wait until the blue blur returns to theaters. While the release date is confirmed, plot details and further casting information remain under wraps for now.
The announcement comes as no surprise, given the phenomenal success of Sonic the Hedgehog 3. The film raked in a massive $218 million domestically and over $420 million worldwide, making it the highest-grossing film in the Sonic franchise to date, surpassing the impressive $148 million earned by the first film. This success is particularly noteworthy considering the initial controversy surrounding the original Sonic design, which underwent significant changes during post-production.
Sonic the Hedgehog 3 also holds the distinction of being the second highest-grossing video game movie in North America, trailing only the animated Super Mario Bros. Movie, continuing the epic rivalry between Nintendo and Sega on the silver screen.
The live-action *Sonic* franchise continues to expand, now boasting three feature films and a *Knuckles* spin-off TV series. Based on the beloved Sega video game franchise, the films follow Sonic (voiced by Ben Schwartz) as he battles his nemesis, Dr. Robotnik (Jim Carrey). Each installment has introduced more iconic characters, including Tails (Colleen O'Shaughnessey) and Knuckles (Idris Elba), with *Sonic 3* finally introducing Shadow the Hedgehog (Keanu Reeves). While Sonic 3 revealed the next character to join the franchise, we'll keep that a secret for now.
