Starting Tips for Dragon Quest III: HD-2D Remake

For fans of classic JRPGs, Dragon Quest III: HD-2D Remake is a nostalgic trip back to the series' roots. However, its old-school difficulty demands careful planning. Here are some essential tips to conquer Baramos.

Master the Personality Test

At the game's outset, you'll face a personality quiz administered by "She Who Watches Over All." This determines your hero's stats, significantly impacting gameplay. While you can alter personality later with specific accessories, restarting for your preferred traits is simpler. The optimal personality is "Vamp," exclusive to female heroes.

Customize Your Party

In Aliahan, instead of accepting Patty's pre-set party, ascend to the second floor. There, you can create a custom team with classes Patty omits, assign stats, and even influence personalities, creating superior party members. Crucially, always include a Priest for essential healing.

Acquire Key Weapons: Boomerang and Thorn Whip

Early-game resources are scarce, so powerful weapons are vital. Seek the Boomerang (Dreamer's Tower, third floor chest) and the Thorn Whip (Aliahan well, requires two Mini Medals from Morgan Minimann). Four Mini Medals are readily available in the early game; two in Aliahan and two in Dreamer's Tower. These weapons' multi-enemy attack capability makes them invaluable, especially for your Hero and a strength-focused character.

Direct Party Actions: Utilize "Follow Orders"

While often overlooked, direct party control is not always a given in RPGs. In Dragon Quest III: HD-2D Remake, switch your party's behavior to "Follow Orders" via the in-combat Tactics menu. This seemingly minor detail grants crucial control during intense battles.

Stock Up on Chimaera Wings

Early enemies can inflict devastating damage. Fast travel is unavailable until acquiring the Zoom spell (around Hero level 8). Until then, keep Chimaera Wings (25 gold each) readily available for quick escapes and strategic repositioning, especially to protect injured party members.

Dragon Quest III HD-2D Remake is available on PlayStation, Xbox, PC, and Nintendo Switch.
