Suikoden STAR LEAP Is The Franchise’s First Mobile RPG
Konami Wanted To Reach A Wider Audience
Suikoden's latest venture, Suikoden STAR LEAP, aims to deliver a gaming experience akin to that of a console game. In a revealing interview with Famitsu on March 4, 2025, the developers behind Star Leap shared their vision for the game.
Star Leap Producer Shinya Fujimatsu explained the decision to target the mobile platform, stating, "Our goal was to make Suikoden accessible to as many people as possible. Mobile gaming is the most convenient way to play, and we wanted to ensure that Star Leap embodies the essence of Suikoden. We're striving to create a game that feels like a true addition to the series."
The development team is committed to merging the high-quality visuals, immersive soundscapes, and compelling narratives of console games with the accessibility and convenience of mobile platforms.
Expressing Suikoden in STAR LEAP
Fujimatsu highlighted the unique blend of themes in Suikoden, saying, "The series has always been about war and friendship, and in Suikoden STAR LEAP, it's crucial to convey the saga of the new 108 stars effectively."
Director Yoshiki Meng Shan further elaborated on the series' distinct characteristics, noting, "Suikoden combines an upbeat atmosphere with serious moments, focusing on the bonds of friendship. Additionally, the fast-paced battles involving multiple characters working together are hallmarks of the series."
Both a Sequel and a Prequel to the Series
Star Leap is designed to serve as both a sequel and a prequel, navigating through various timelines within the Suikoden universe. This new installment will officially become part of the series' canon, beginning its story two years before the events of Suikoden 1 and spanning different eras, effectively bridging the narrative between Suikoden 1 and 5.
Encouraging fans to anticipate the game, Fujimatsu remarked, "Star Leap offers high-quality gameplay. Even newcomers to the series can easily dive into the story and gameplay thanks to its mobile format. We hope it serves as an excellent entry point into the world of 'Suikoden Genso'."
Echoing this sentiment, Meng Shan added, "Suikoden is a renowned RPG series in Japan. We've poured our efforts into every aspect—from the story and graphics to the battle system, sound, and training system—to ensure it lives up to the Suikoden name. We're eager for players to experience it upon release."
Suikoden STAR LEAP was unveiled during the Suikoden Live broadcast on March 4, 2025, alongside other exciting developments in the series. The game is in development for iOS and Android platforms, though an official release date has yet to be announced.
