If you've been following us for a while, you're likely familiar with our parent company's event, Pocket Gamer Connects. One of our highlights at these events is the Big Indie Pitch, where we showcase innovative indie games to a panel of judges. Today, we're excited to spotlight Talystro, a standout third-place winner that blends roguelike deckbuilding with unique gameplay mechanics.
At first glance, Talystro might seem like just another deckbuilding roguelike—a genre that's currently very popular. However, a closer look reveals what sets it apart. In Talystro, you step into the shoes of the math mouse, navigating through runs to overthrow the evil Necrodicer. The game cleverly integrates dice and card mechanics, challenging you to build scores and defeat math-based enemies.
So, how does it work? You'll use a combination of dice and cards to hit a target number, which allows you to eliminate monsters represented by specific numbers. Be mindful, though, as you have a limited number of dice rolls per turn.
Crypt of the NecrodicerTalystro boasts a unique visual style, blending rubber hose animations with a fantasy aesthetic reminiscent of those math-focused educational games from your childhood. While the game doesn't require advanced math skills, its engaging gameplay is both easy to understand and captivating from the outset.
Set to launch in March, Talystro promises a simple yet challenging experience that many deckbuilders struggle to achieve. Its easy-to-grasp mechanics combined with a hard-to-master depth are what I believe will captivate players.
