The writer of the Wesley Snipes' Blade trilogy, David S. Goyer, has expressed his readiness to assist Marvel chief Kevin Feige in reviving Mahershala Ali's stalled MCU reboot of Blade. The project, initially announced at San Diego Comic-Con in 2019, has faced numerous delays and setbacks, causing significant uncertainty about its future.
Recent developments have shed light on the troubled production. Rapper and artist Flying Lotus revealed on X/Twitter that he was set to compose music for the film before it fell apart. He expressed doubt about the project's revival but acknowledged the potential it once held. Similarly, costume designer Ruth E. Carter confirmed on The John Campea Show that she was tasked with designing costumes for a 1920s-set Blade, a setting that promised unique aesthetic opportunities. Actor Delroy Lindo, who was attached to the project alongside Ali, also shared his disappointment, noting that the inclusive and exciting vision for the film ultimately derailed.
Blade has seen a carousel of directors, including Yann Demange and Bassam Tariq, none of whom have remained with the project. The film was removed from Marvel's release schedule seven months ago, and no new release date has been set. However, Kevin Feige has reassured fans that Marvel Studios remains committed to bringing Blade to the MCU, emphasizing their dedication to the character and Mahershala Ali's portrayal.
Amidst the uncertainty surrounding Blade, the MCU film Deadpool & Wolverine, featuring a cameo by Wesley Snipes as Blade, became a blockbuster, grossing $1.3 billion globally. Ryan Reynolds, who stars as Deadpool, has publicly advocated for a send-off film for Snipes' Blade, similar to Hugh Jackman's Logan. Reynolds credits the original Blade films with paving the way for the superhero genre's success, stating, "There is no Fox Marvel Universe or MCU without Blade first creating a market. He’s Marvel Daddy."
In addition to his advocacy for a Blade send-off, Reynolds is reportedly in the early stages of developing a Deadpool and X-Men ensemble film. According to The Hollywood Reporter, Reynolds envisions a movie where Deadpool shares the spotlight with other X-Men characters, allowing them to take center stage and be utilized in innovative ways.
