The possibility of Wind Waker HD being ported to the Nintendo Switch 2 remains open, even as the original GameCube version of Wind Waker is set to be released on the new console. Dive into the details of Nintendo's considerations and the enhancements Wind Waker HD brings over the classic game.
Wind Waker GameCube Version Coming To Switch 2
Nintendo announced during the Nintendo Direct for Switch 2 on April 2 that the GameCube version of Wind Waker will be available on the new console. This news sparked curiosity among fans about the potential release of Wind Waker HD on the Switch 2.
Nintendo of America's Senior Vice President of Product Development, Nate Bihldorff, addressed these concerns. In a discussion captured in a Kinda Funny Games Daily episode on April 9, host Tim Gettys shared insights from a conversation with Bihldorff at a Switch 2 press event in New York. When asked about the possibility of a Wind Waker HD port, Bihldorff responded, "no, all options are on the table," indicating that nothing is ruled out yet.
First Released in 2002
Originally launched in Japan in 2002 and in the West in 2003, Wind Waker on the GameCube received a significant update with Wind Waker HD on the Wii U in 2013. This updated version boasted enhanced visuals from 480p to HD, improved lighting, gyro controls for weapons, quicker sailing, and various gameplay enhancements. Given that the GameCube library is exclusive to the Switch 2, porting Wind Waker HD could be the only option for original Switch owners to experience the game.
Additionally, Nintendo is rebranding its Nintendo Switch Online classics game libraries to "Nintendo Classics." Members of Nintendo Switch Online + Expansion Pack will soon have access to The Legend of Zelda: The Wind Waker, F-ZERO GX, and SOULCALIBUR II on the Nintendo Switch 2, with more titles on the horizon. These games will feature options like retro screen filters and widescreen gameplay, enhancing the nostalgic experience.
