Zack Snyder has confirmed he’s stepping away from Rebel Moon to focus on other projects.
Star Wars-inspired sci-fi film Rebel Moon debuted on Netflix in December 2023 to considerable buzz. Set in a galaxy dominated by the imperialistic Motherworld, whose military forces—the Imperium—threaten a village on the moon Veldt, the story follows a group of rebels rising up in defiance.
Though Netflix held high expectations for Rebel Moon, critics were largely unimpressed. IGN’s review gave it a 4/10, stating: “Zack Snyder’s space opera is hampered by a derivative script, mediocre action sequences, and a superficial narrative.”
The sequel, Rebel Moon – Part Two: The Scargiver, arrived in April 2024 and received a comparable response. IGN’s review of The Scargiver also scored a 4/10: “The second chapter of Zack Snyder’s Rebel Moon space opera delivers a half-baked conclusion to a well-worn tale, with underdeveloped characters and uninspired action.” R-rated director’s cuts of both films were released in 2024 and drew a more favorable reaction.
“I got pulled into this—well, not pulled, it’s all upper-level problems, as they say—for Netflix, I’m working on an LAPD SWAT movie,” Snyder told Variety in a recent interview. “So I thought, OK, I’ll let the Rebel Moon world simmer for a bit and focus on this instead.”
The director and writer of Man of Steel, best known for his contributions to the now-rebooted DC Universe, also spoke about the challenges of juggling two major projects at once.
“Frankly, it was an incredibly draining, lengthy process making both films back-to-back. So it felt good to take a step back,” he said. “I love it deeply, but a little break is welcome. We’ll see where things stand once I finish this and come back to it.”
Regarding potential future stories or additional film adaptations within the Rebel Moon universe, Snyder remained largely evasive. “There are countless stories. I mean, it’s literally endless,” he said. “But as I’ve said, I’m waiting to see how we might want to move forward—if we do at all.”
Still, it’s clear Snyder believes the potential for Rebel Moon is limitless—especially now that a video game spinoff set in the same universe, titled Blood Line, has been announced.
