In a recent interview with IGN, Capcom producer Yoshiaki Hirabayashi confirmed the sequel directly continues the narrative of the original game. When pressed about the identity of the celestial wolf depicted in the TGA trailer, director Hideki Kamiya offered a cryptic "I wonder...", but Hirabayashi swiftly confirmed it to be Amaterasu.
While this confirmation is unsurprising to many fans, the developers addressed the elephant in the room: Ōkamiden. This Nintendo DS title, starring Amaterasu's offspring Chibiterasu, served as a previous sequel but received mixed reviews due to its platform and the absence of key original team members. Hirabayashi acknowledged both the positive and negative player feedback regarding Ōkamiden's storyline, stating that the new sequel will be a direct continuation of the original Ōkami's narrative.
The original Ōkami's ending, without revealing spoilers, sets the stage perfectly for a sequel. Amaterasu and a companion embark on a new, unexplored journey, leaving ample opportunity for fresh challenges and adventures.
However, fans shouldn't expect a deluge of details anytime soon. The team emphasized that development is in its very early stages, explaining the premature announcement as a result of their excitement. Hirabayashi indicated that further updates might be some time coming.
