VNeID: Vietnam's Electronic Identification and Authentication Application
The VNeID application, developed by Vietnam's National Population Data Center (Ministry of Public Security), leverages population data for digital identification and authentication. It's designed for Vietnamese residents and visitors.
VNeID replaces physical documents, enabling digital identity verification and facilitating various digital citizen services. Its uses include medical report submission, streamlined domestic travel declarations, and assisting authorities in COVID-19 contact tracing and notification.
Application Access Permissions: Using VNeID grants the app access to:
- Internet access for data transmission.
- Camera access to scan CCCD (Citizen Identity Card) QR codes, speeding up information entry and verification at checkpoints.
- Access to device photos, videos, audio, and files to store QR code images for verification.
- Notification access to send alerts to the user.
Personal Information Collection: Users provide information voluntarily, including (but not limited to): full name, phone number, citizen ID, gender, birthdate, address, nationality, health status, travel details (origin, destination, vehicle information), and COVID-19 exposure details. All data is collected with user consent via in-app forms. Users are responsible for the accuracy and appropriateness of the information they submit.
Privacy and Copyright Protection: The National Population Data Center securely stores and manages user data, strictly for COVID-19 prevention, public health, and disease control. Data is never used for commercial purposes or to violate user privacy. Data sharing may occur with health authorities and relevant government agencies to enhance COVID-19 prevention efforts. No other uses of user data are permitted. The app adheres to Vietnamese law and its own policy regarding user privacy and data security.
Key Privacy Features:
- No Location Tracking: VNeID does not collect location data.
- Anonymity: User participation is anonymous except for those identified by authorities as infected or at risk due to close contact with an infected individual.
