Sonic Fan-Made Game Has Serious Sonic Mania Vibes

Sonic Galactic: A Sonic Mania-Inspired Fan Game

Sonic Galactic, a fan-made game from Starteam, captures the spirit of Sonic Mania, appealing to players who appreciate pixel art and classic Sonic gameplay. This homage to the beloved franchise offers a fresh take on the series, incorporating new playable characters and unique level designs.

The game's development spans at least four years, with its initial reveal at the 2020 Sonic Amateur Games Expo. Starteam envisioned Sonic Galactic as a hypothetical 32-bit title for 5th generation consoles – a "what if" scenario exploring a potential Sega Saturn release. The result is a faithful retro 2D platformer reminiscent of the Genesis era, infused with the developers' own creative flair.

The recently released second demo (early 2025) features the iconic trio – Sonic, Tails, and Knuckles – traversing brand-new zones. Joining the classic cast are two new playable characters: Fang the Sniper (from Sonic Triple Trouble), seeking revenge against Dr. Eggman, and Tunnel the Mole, a character originating from Illusion Island.

Each playable character boasts unique pathways through the levels, echoing the design of Sonic Mania. The special stages, too, are heavily inspired by Mania, presenting players with 3D ring-collecting challenges against the clock. A typical playthrough focuses on Sonic's stages, taking roughly an hour to complete. The other characters each have a single stage, resulting in a total playtime of around two hours. This substantial gameplay experience, packed into a second demo, showcases the game's potential. The game's nostalgic pixel art style and faithful gameplay mechanics make it a compelling experience for long-time Sonic fans.
