Nintendo Switch 2 Joy-Cons May Function as Computer Mice: Evidence Suggests Novel Control Option
Recent circumstantial evidence suggests the Nintendo Switch 2 Joy-Cons may offer an unconventional control scheme: mouse functionality. While the widespread adoption of this feature by game developers remains uncertain, it aligns with Nintendo's history of innovative experimentation.
This intriguing possibility stems from Vietnamese customs data, obtained by Famiboards user LiC, detailing shipments to a suspected Nintendo parts supplier. This data source, previously responsible for numerous Switch 2 leaks since mid-2024, has yielded another potential revelation.
In early January 2025, LiC shared details of polyethylene (PE) adhesive tape described in shipping manifests as "mouse soles" – a term typically used for the bottom of computer mice – and intended "to stick to game console handles." This strongly suggests the Switch 2 Joy-Cons might incorporate mouse-like capabilities.
Two "mouse sole" model numbers, LG7 and SML7, were referenced. These designations are absent from public component databases, indicating potentially new, unreleased products. The listed size, 90 x 90mm, appears large enough to cover the entire back of the Joy-Cons, likely requiring trimming during assembly. The legitimacy of this information, however, remains unconfirmed.
Not a First for Handhelds
While innovative for Nintendo, this isn't unprecedented in the handheld gaming space. Lenovo's Legion GO, released in 2023, already features a mouse mode for its right controller when rotated sideways. Lenovo even provides a plastic slider to enhance surface movement in this mode.
The Legion GO also boasts magnetic controller rails, another rumored Switch 2 feature. This similarity further fuels speculation regarding the design and functionality of Nintendo's next hybrid console.
