The Last of Us Season 2 Will Feature 'Pretty Brutal' Content Cut From the Game

HBO's The Last of Us Season 2 will feature previously cut content from the video game The Last of Us Part II, according to showrunner and Naughty Dog studio head Neil Druckmann. Druckmann revealed to Entertainment Weekly that the show will revive "pretty brutal" material, including elements from the game's "Lost Levels," partially restored in the PS5 remaster. These levels, such as Jackson Party, The Hunt, and Seattle Sewers, offer diverse scenarios, ranging from calmer scenes (Ellie at a party, tracking a boar) to intense horror sequences in Seattle's underground tunnels.

The inclusion of this cut content promises a gripping experience. Druckmann hinted at the appearance of a previously unshown, "pretty prominent" character, mirroring Season 1's handling of Frank. Season 2 introduces numerous new characters, including Kaitlyn Dever as Abby, Danny Ramirez as Manny, and Tati Gabrielle as Mel, with Catherine O'Hara in a currently undisclosed role.

The first episode premieres in April, but the narrative arc of Part II will extend beyond a single season. Unlike Season 1's complete adaptation of the first game, showrunner Craig Mazin stated that Part II's extensive story necessitates a multi-season approach. While Season 3 isn't confirmed, Season 2 concludes with a "natural breakpoint" after seven episodes.
