A fresh look at retro gaming on the Nintendo Switch, focusing on Game Boy Advance and Nintendo DS titles available on the eShop. Surprisingly, fewer GBA and DS ports exist on Switch compared to other consoles. This list highlights ten favorites—four GBA and six DS games—found outside the Nintendo Switch Online app. No specific ranking is implied.
Game Boy Advance
Steel Empire (2004) – Over Horizon X Steel Empire ($14.99)
Kicking things off with the shoot 'em up, Steel Empire. While the Genesis/Mega Drive version holds a slight edge, this GBA iteration offers a solid experience. A worthwhile comparison to the original, and arguably a more streamlined playthrough. Steel Empire is enjoyable regardless of the platform, appealing even to non-shooter fans.
Mega Man Zero – Mega Man Zero/ZX Legacy Collection ($29.99)
The Mega Man X series faltered on home consoles, but its true successor emerged on the GBA: Mega Man Zero. This marks the beginning of a fantastic side-scrolling action series, though its initial entry features some minor rough edges. These imperfections are refined in later installments, but the first game remains the ideal starting point.
Mega Man Battle Network – Mega Man Battle Network Legacy Collection ($59.99)
A second Mega Man entry, justified by the distinct gameplay differences between Mega Man Zero and Mega Man Battle Network. This RPG boasts a unique battle system blending action and strategy. The concept of a virtual world within electronic devices is cleverly executed. While later entries in this series see diminishing returns, the original offers substantial fun.
Castlevania: Aria of Sorrow – Castlevania Advance Collection ($19.99)
Another collection containing multiple worthwhile games, Aria of Sorrow stands out as a personal favorite, even surpassing the acclaimed Symphony of the Night for some. The soul-collecting mechanic encourages grinding, which is easily forgiven given the addictive gameplay. A unique setting and hidden secrets contribute to its appeal. A top-tier GBA title.
Nintendo DS
Shantae: Risky’s Revenge – Director’s Cut ($9.99)
The original Shantae gained cult status, but limited distribution hampered its reach. Shantae: Risky’s Revenge on DSiWare propelled the Half-Genie Hero to greater fame. Its success solidified Shantae's presence across subsequent console generations. Interestingly, this game's roots trace back to an unreleased GBA title, which is slated for release soon.
Phoenix Wright: Ace Attorney – Phoenix Wright: Ace Attorney Trilogy ($29.99)
Arguably a GBA title given its origins, Ace Attorney is a compelling adventure game. It combines on-site investigations with dramatic courtroom scenes, blending goofy humor and engaging narratives. The first game is exceptionally strong, though later installments also hold merit.
Ghost Trick: Phantom Detective ($29.99)
From the creator of Ace Attorney, Ghost Trick features equally strong writing and unique gameplay. As a ghost, you utilize your abilities to save individuals while unraveling the mystery surrounding your death. A captivating and highly recommended experience.
The World Ends With You: Final Remix ($49.99)
The World Ends With You is a top-tier Nintendo DS game, best experienced on its original hardware. While ports haven't perfectly replicated the original experience, the Switch version provides a suitable alternative for those without access to a Nintendo DS.
Castlevania: Dawn of Sorrow – Castlevania Dominus Collection ($24.99)
The recently released Castlevania Dominus Collection includes all Nintendo DS Castlevania titles. Dawn of Sorrow is highlighted due to its improved button controls compared to the original touch controls. However, all three DS games in this collection are recommended.
Etrian Odyssey III HD – Etrian Odyssey Origins Collection ($79.99)
This franchise thrives within the DS/3DS ecosystem, but Atlus's Switch adaptation is still playable. Each Etrian Odyssey game offers a standalone, substantial RPG experience. Etrian Odyssey III, the largest of the three, is a worthwhile investment despite its quirks.
