Last year saw many fantastic game releases, but one indie title truly shone: the roguelike Balatro. Developed by a single person, Balatro defied expectations, earning critical praise and achieving phenomenal commercial success, surpassing 5 million copies sold!
Just over a month ago, developer LocalThunk celebrated reaching 3.5 million sales. This means an astounding 1.5 million additional copies were sold in approximately 40 days! This surge is likely due to the impact of The Game Awards, a possibility hinted at by the developer on Twitter.
Harvey Elliott, CEO of publisher Playstack, lauded this milestone as an incredible achievement, expressing immense pride in both LocalThunk and Playstack's team.
Even nearly a year after its release, Balatro continues to flourish. This card-based roguelike receives regular updates, including exciting collaborations, and recently reached a new peak in concurrent Steam players.
