TouchArcade Rating:
Capcom's recent update to their iOS and iPadOS ports of Resident Evil 7 biohazard, Resident Evil 4 Remake, and Resident Evil Village has introduced a controversial online DRM system. This update, implemented to verify game ownership and DLC purchases, requires an internet connection every time you launch the games. While previous versions allowed offline play, this change prevents launching the games without an active internet connection. The verification process, while quick, adds an unnecessary step and removes the previously available offline functionality.
This forced online check is a significant drawback for players who previously purchased these premium titles. While some may not be affected, the loss of offline access is a considerable inconvenience. The update negatively impacts the overall user experience, making it less appealing for players who value offline play. Hopefully, Capcom will reconsider this implementation and find a less intrusive method for verifying purchases, perhaps by implementing a less frequent check. This update unfortunately makes recommending Capcom's mobile ports more difficult.
The games remain free to try. You can download Resident Evil 7 biohazard on iOS, iPadOS, and macOS here, Resident Evil 4 Remake here, and Resident Evil Village here. My reviews can be found here, here, and here. What are your thoughts on this update and do you own these Resident Evil titles on iOS?
