DC's upcoming film adaptation of The Authority faces setbacks, according to DC Studios co-chief James Gunn. Initially announced as a major project within Chapter 1: Gods and Monsters, the film has been moved to the "back burner."
Gunn cited the project's complexity and the existing landscape of similar superhero properties, particularly Amazon's The Boys, as contributing factors. He acknowledged the challenge of adapting The Authority's notoriously brutal style while navigating the evolving narrative of the DC Universe and incorporating established characters already featured in other projects. The film's development is currently paused to allow for these complexities to be addressed.
While The Authority is temporarily sidelined, other projects within Chapter 1: Gods and Monsters are progressing. The Engineer, a key member of The Authority, is slated to appear in the upcoming Superman film. This character, known for her technological prowess and immense power, is arguably the team's most formidable member. Other projects experiencing delays include Waller, a spin-off of Peacemaker, which has encountered production hurdles. Conversely, Booster Gold is progressing smoothly, and Paradise Lost remains a high priority, with the pilot script currently underway. Swamp Thing, directed by James Mangold, is on hold pending Mangold's availability after completing other projects, but its delay is not considered critical to the overarching DCU narrative.
The shifting priorities within the DCU highlight the challenges of balancing ambitious projects with the need for cohesive storytelling and efficient production schedules. While some projects face delays, others are moving forward, suggesting a dynamic and evolving approach to the DC Universe's cinematic future.
