Xu Wu is a highly agile boss in Monster Hunter Wilds. Engaging it in combat can be particularly frustrating due to its elusive movements and unique shape. Similar to Nu Udra, its dark coloring makes it challenging to distinguish its front from its back. In addition to contending with its multiple arms, Xu Wu can also vanish into walls and reappear on the ceiling, attempting to ambush you from above. This tactic is limited to its nest, so heightened vigilance is crucial when fighting there.
Use Ice Attacks
Xu Wu exhibits a pronounced vulnerability to Ice in Monster Hunter Wilds. Consider employing Ice ammo or, if you prefer melee combat, equip gear capable of delivering elemental damage. Enhancing your equipment with a Frost Jewel decoration can grant you the Ice Attack skill, amplifying your effectiveness. Carrying a Frost Pod is also advisable, as it can inflict minor Ice damage, contributing to your strategy against this beast.
Avoid the Grab Attack
In addition to its tentacles and elusive movements, Xu Wu employs a grab attack in Monster Hunter Wilds. Being caught means you can't use your regular weapons, but you have a brief two-second window to escape. Your best bet is to use your slinger, with Frost Pods proving particularly effective in breaking free.
Attack Xu Wu’s Mouth
The mouth of Xu Wu is its weakest point, though it's hidden beneath its body, making it difficult to target. You'll typically only get a chance to strike it when the monster lunges at you. Landing a strong attack in this moment can cause substantial damage and potentially break its mouth, rewarding you with Xu Wu's fang. If the mouth is out of reach, the head is another prime target, boasting a 4-star weakness to blunt and cut damage and a 3-star vulnerability to ammo damage.
Use Poison
Xu Wu's susceptibility to Poison is rated at 3 stars, making it an effective strategy to weaken the monster. A bow equipped with Poison Coating can be particularly useful. While other status ailments can be applied, steer clear of Sleep, as it's less effective against Xu Wu.

Using meat as bait can be effective, but positioning yourself as bait is another viable tactic to lure the beast in. After trapping it, swiftly shoot a tranquilizer at Xu Wu to prevent its escape.
