Blood Line, the video game spinoff from Zack Snyder's Rebel Moon universe, launched today, even as the future of its parent film series remains unclear.
Netflix subscribers may have been surprised to find Blood Line: A Rebel Moon Game available to play on their mobile devices today. Developed by Super Evil Mega Corp, the studio behind Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Splintered Fate, this spinoff drops players into the sci-fi world Snyder introduced in 2023, offering isometric, twin-stick shooter action.
An official description for Blood Line states: "Take on intense combat missions in this multiplayer action game. Build a rebellion against the Motherworld and fight for your planet’s freedom."
Playable solo or with friends, Blood Line features a standalone story separate from Rebel Moon Parts 1 and 2. Furthermore, Netflix Games and Super Evil Mega Corp promise the game will "expand and evolve across regular post-launch updates." With more challenges and rewards planned, Blood Line's roadmap appears far more certain than that of its originating film series.
Rebel Moon: Part 1 – A Child of Fire premiered in late 2023, introducing Snyder's new world. Despite its presentation as a major sci-fi epic, Part 1 failed to resonate, earning a 22% critics score and a 56% audience score on Rotten Tomatoes (we scored it a 4/10 in our review). Rebel Moon: Part 2 – The Scargiver attempted a course correction upon its April 2024 release but landed similarly, receiving 16% from critics and 47% from fans (we also gave it a 4/10).
Extended "Snyder Cut" versions of both films arrived on Netflix in August 2024 to more positive audience reception, but Netflix has been silent on the saga's continuation. In a recent Variety interview, Snyder discussed his work with the streamer. While Rebel Moon and its characters are still on his mind, he indicated other projects will take priority first.
“I got sidetracked into this — not sidetracked, it’s all uptown problems, as they say — for Netflix, I’m working on an LAPD SWAT movie,” Snyder said. “So I was like, OK, well, I’m gonna just sort of let that Rebel Moon world simmer for a minute, and I’m gonna go do this. Frankly, it was a very exhausting, long process making the two movies. So it was nice to have a bit of a break. I love it passionately, but a pause was welcome. We’ll see, after I finish this, when I return, where everything stands."
Snyder added that "tons of stories" exist within the Rebel Moon universe, though he still needs to determine how—or if—it will expand further.
