Jar of Sparks, NetEase's Studio, Pauses First Game Project; Seeks New Publisher
Jerry Hook, former Halo Infinite design lead, announced that his studio, Jar of Sparks, a NetEase subsidiary, has temporarily halted development on its inaugural game project. Hook, who left 343 Industries and Microsoft in 2022 to establish Jar of Sparks, described the project as a "next-generation narrative-driven action game." The studio's recent silence indicated potential challenges, culminating in the confirmed search for a new publishing partner.
NetEase, a global gaming giant, currently supports live-service titles such as Once Human and Marvel Rivals. The latter, launched in December 2024, recently unveiled its Season 1 Battle Pass and anticipates the arrival of the Fantastic Four in January 2025.
In a LinkedIn post, Hook confirmed the development pause, explaining that Jar of Sparks is actively seeking a publisher who can effectively realize the studio's creative vision. He expressed pride in the team's innovative work and bold creative risks.
Jar of Sparks' Transition and Team Support
While Hook's post didn't explicitly mention layoffs, he did state that team members would be exploring new opportunities. A subsequent post clarified that the studio will assist its employees in finding new positions over the coming weeks. This situation mirrors other instances of veteran developers establishing studios with NetEase, such as Hiroyuki Kobayashi's GPTRACK50 Studios.
The Future of Jar of Sparks and Halo
The Halo franchise, Hook's former domain, has faced its share of challenges recently, including mixed reactions to Halo Infinite's post-launch content and the Halo Paramount+ series. As Jar of Sparks temporarily suspends its project, 343 Industries' rebranding to Halo Studios and its shift to Unreal Engine may signal a potential resurgence for the Halo franchise.
