HBO's 'The Last of Us' Abby Abstains from Bulking Due to Departure from Video Game Conventions

Author : Benjamin Feb 24,2025

HBO's adaptation of The Last of Us Part 2 will portray Abby differently than her video game counterpart. Showrunner Neil Druckmann explains that actress Kaitlyn Dever didn't need the same physical build as the game's Abby because the show prioritizes drama over moment-to-moment violent action. The character's strength will be explored through a different lens, focusing on her inner resilience rather than solely on physical prowess.

Druckmann emphasizes the differing needs of the game versus the show: the game requires distinct playable characters, with Abby designed as a physically imposing figure, while the show allows for a more nuanced portrayal. Craig Mazin, co-showrunner, adds that this approach offers an opportunity to explore a more vulnerable yet spiritually stronger Abby.

The show's creators plan to adapt Part 2 beyond a single season, unlike Season 1's adaptation of the first game. Season 2 will conclude with a natural stopping point after seven episodes, leaving room for future installments.

The controversial nature of Abby's character in the game has led to online harassment targeting Druckmann, actress Laura Bailey, and even their families. This online toxicity prompted increased security measures for actress Kaitlyn Dever during filming, highlighting the intense reaction to a fictional character. Isabel Merced, who plays Dina, underscores the importance of remembering that Abby is not a real person.
