New Mercenary Troops System Added to Age of Empires Mobile

Author : Chloe May 16,2025

Ever dreamed of witnessing Joan of Arc commanding Roman Centurions or Hannibal Barca deploying Japanese Samurai to conquer Rome? The new update for Age of Empires Mobile makes this a reality with the introduction of the Mercenary Troops system. This innovative feature allows players to recruit units typically unavailable to their chosen faction, adding a thrilling layer of strategy to the game.

Starting at level 26, players can unlock the Mercenary Camp, a new structure that enables the hiring of these powerful units. Not only can you recruit these mercenaries, but you can also unlock and upgrade specific technology to enhance their capabilities on the battlefield. To kick things off, a new event is now live where you can secure your first set of mercenaries for free.

The Mercenary Troops system introduces a diverse range of units including Byzantine Cataphracts, Swiss Pikemen, Persian Immortals, Indian Battle Elephants, Roman Centurions, Egyptian Chariot Archers, Japanese Samurai, and Korean Archers. Each of these units comes with tech upgrades that boost their already impressive battlefield prowess.

The addition of the Mercenary troops system evokes memories of Total War games, where hiring a horde of mercenaries could turn the tide of battle. While some players might worry about the potential disruption to game balance, the true impact will only be revealed as players engage with this new feature. There's even speculation about future additions like historical Landsknechts, but for now, we'll have to wait and see how it unfolds.
